The guy took a little getting used to, but this video offers a simple understanding of the importance and subletly that compression brings to the mix.

In addition to enjoying Matthew Kyle's music, which I initially discovered on Soundcloud, I have recently found out about his blog. There is a certain similarity in the vibe of his music and blog that I can relate to. I thought this was a good case study for us.

Stumbled upon this whilst investigating both Malstrom and Subtractor plug ins. Both look really solid at replicating synth sounds, and also creating some dope drums.
Might be worth looking into a little deeper, as they seem quite user friendly.
